Rudy Vanderlans (1955 – )

Rudy Vanderlans was born in the Netherlands in 1955. He attended The Royal Academy of Art in The Hague where he would study Graphic Design. Upon graduating in 1979 he would go on to practice Graphic Design as an apprentice and junior designer with such companies as Vorm Vijf, Tel Design, and Total Design. However in 1981 he headed west to pursue his Masters in Photography at the University of California, Berkeley, where he would ultimately meet someone who would change his life forever…


Her name was Zuzana Licko and she was studying to get her degree in visual graphics when she meet Rudy Vanderlans. The two would get married, and not long after form there own Magazine together called “Emirge” in 1984. This was a great year for the two to start such a company as only a few months later apple released its first computer. With this new technology at their finger tips they began design new typefaces too use in there magazine. This created an ever growing demand for their typefaces and many more which lead them to then found “Emergy Type Foundry” in 1985. So from 1984 to 2005 Randy Vanderlans would produce The Emirge Magazine with his wife by his side.

Although he was forever growing and expanding his brand of the Emirge Magazine he still made time for his photography. Over the years he has produced 6 photography books mainly concentrating on his now home state of California.
