Morris Fuller Benton (1872 – 1948)

My chosen artist was Morris Fulller Benton, type designer from the early 1900’s. He was born on November 30, 1872 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and was son of Linn Boyd Benton. Linn Benton was the inventor of the pantographic punch-cutting machine and founded  the American Typefounders agglomeration in 1892.

This Machine was capable of scaling a single font design pattern to a variety of sizes, but could also condense, extend, and slant the design. Graduating from Cornell University with a degree in engineering he began work with his father within the ATF. While working with his father, Morris was able to increase the precision of the pantographic punch-cutting machine changing the type world. Thus began hes career as a type designer that would span nearly two hundred fonts including New Century Schoolbook and Bank Gothic.
